E-Cycling Near You
Technology is evolving so quickly that before you finally figure out how to create a Smart Playlist on your new iPod, the next bigger and better version is unveiled. Whether you fall easy prey to technology turnover or not, chances are you have had to dispose of outdated equipment, or soon will.
By Amanda Schmitz
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only 15 to 20 percent of personal computers, TVs, cell phones and other electronic devices are being recycled in the United States. Our love for the best tech tools has led to a glut not only in U.S. generated e-waste is shipped to places like Asia and India despite international laws banning the practice. Scrap yards in Asia met a growing demand for e-waste when it was discovered they could extract profitable substances like copper, iron, silicon, nickel and god during the recycling process.
Before the dust gathering on your old computer turns to guilt, you´ll be happy to learn earth-friendly ways to retire your old equipment exist. If your computer is less than five years old (as a general rule) there are several organizations and refurbishings centers that will help you repurpose yor device. If your computer is no longer working or is more five years old you should plan to recycle it.
RECYCLE If your equipment is out-dated, recylce it with a reputable company or non-profit. The first place you should investigate is your computer´s manufacturer. Growing "green" awareness has pushed companies to take accountability for the afterlife of their products. Most manufacturers offer a take-back program for a minima fee Here are more options:
INTERCON SOLUTIONS 1001-59 Washington Chicago Hts. 708-756-9838, ask for Frank Cusimano. Pack and ship your computer to the recycling center or drop off directly; see interconrecycling.com for fees. This is a zero-waste facility and has been featured on Discovery Channel, the NBC national evening news and in PC Magazine.
